Through the practice of drawing, the world unfolds before your eyes, one page and one mark at a time.  “Practice, practice, practice and everything will come”, the words of a famous yogi, perfectly describe the process of learning to draw and to improving and maintaining skills already achieved. Each class engages participants in a guided practice adaptable to their own level, and offers exercises they can use to practice outside of class. The focus of this course is on learning to see, engaging ones senses in the present moment, and enjoying the process of drawing as it enriches the way we perceive the world.

This class is suitable for all levels and may be taken pro-rata during each session: Session I February/March, Session II, April/May, and Session III, June 2015.

Materials: Sketch paper and drawing ink are provided. A supply list will be available upon registration.

Cross Reference: This class is recommended as preparation for, or accompaniment to Figure Drawing: One Step at a Time on Thursday mornings.

Children draw naturally, and they usually start by drawing people, often members of the family. The image of the human face or human body is a subject of universal appeal. Yet, without instruction, time, and practice, actually drawing them seems a daunting task to many adults.

This new class will demystify this compelling yet difficult subject, instructing participants, step by step, how to approach drawing the human figure. Exercises will include: studies of master drawings, copies of anatomical illustrations, basic drawing exercises to sharpen perception, and sessions with a live model.

This class will be a good choice for those who:

  • have longed to be able to draw a portrait or figure
  • want the structure and stimulation of a group experience.
  • would like to sharpen their observation skills
  • seek instruction and guidance from an artist (and effective teacher) who specializes in figurative art.
  • wish to practice and improve their figure drawing skills

This class is suitable for all levels and may be taken pro-rata during each session: Session I February/March, Session II April/May, and Session III June 2015.

Materials: The cost of registration covers models’ fees. A materials list will be available upon registration.

Cross Reference: Drawing Practice and Figure Drawing: Step by Step complement one another. Simultaneous enrollment is recommended for anyone wishing a more intensive practice and accelerated learning.

This class welcomes you to the pleasure of painting with a small group in the convivial atmosphere of a private studio. Enjoy and learn from individualized instruction, supportive feedback, challenging assignments, and encouragement from a practicing painter and passionate teacher.

Painting is a craft. It need not be intimidating, but it does require patience and practice to master technique as you learn to express yourself. Watercolor and acrylics are the most practical and non-toxic painting mediums available. This course provides instruction and practice in both.

This class is designed for:

  • Anyone who would like to try painting but finds it hard to begin and would like guidance
  • Students who wish to improve their knowledge of color and composition
  • Those interested in obtaining and improving technical skills in painting.
  • Those who enjoy working with others in the relaxed setting of an artist’s private studio

Anyone who paints on their own but would like exposure to new challenges as well as supportive criticism of their work.

The portability of watercolor makes it an ideal sketching medium and its transparent hues are unique. Acrylic paints are easy to use on either canvas or paper. Their colors, opaque or transparent, are permanent. Acrylics can achieve effects traditionally associated with oil paint without requiring toxic solvents. They are also well suited to collage and mixed media techniques, and are effective as an underpainting medium for oils.

This class is suitable for all levels and may be taken pro-rata during each session: Session I February/March, Session II, April/May, and Session III, June 2015.

Materials: Acrylic paints, gesso and mediums are provided. A supply list will be available upon registration.

Join in the fun as you debark on this creative adventure. You’ll enhance your perceptual skills and learn new techniques, observe the world from an artist’s point of view and create your own very personal work of art.

In English, carnet de voyage translates to “travel diary”. Your Paris carnet will be inspired by poetry readings, artist’s books, and group visits to interesting spots around town.

Document your travels around Paris with notes, sketches, and photographs. You’ll be encouraged to continue this process outside of class, watching and recording each new day as it unfolds.

Meeting places alternate between the instructor’s studio in the 15th quarter and locations around Paris. Studio instruction covers the basics of drawing and graphic design as well as a variety of techniques including stamping, stenciling and collage.

This class will be of interest to:

  • anyone who is new to Paris and would like to discover the city with others.
  • writers, photographers, or artists who would like to create a carnet de voyage while visiting Paris.
  • long term residents of Paris who would like to revive, deepen and personalize their experience of the city.
  • Those who would enjoy and benefit from creative assignments and inspiration from an artist/teacher.

This class is suitable for all levels and may be taken pro-rata during each session: Session I February/March, Session II April/May, and Session III June 2015.

Saturday Printmaking Workshops

Four Saturday Printmaking Workshops_Saturdays 11h00 to 16h00

 Spring 2015 Dates: March 14, April 11, May 30, and June 17

120 euros/workshop_all materials provided

Learn the basics of printmaking through a simple and popular technique known as the ‘monotype’.

Making a monotype print involves no toxic materials or laborious technique. As its name suggests, a monotype is a one-of-a-kind print. Rather than carving or etching, a monotype is made by painting with ink on a smooth surface. Degas loved its ease and used it to create strong atmospheric light and bold textures. Contemporary artists are drawn to it for its immediacy. One can make a print in just a few minutes with almost no technical skill, and some of the monotype techniques do not require a press. One needn’t know how to draw or paint to make monotypes. Stamping, stenciling and collage can be used to create a myriad of beautiful effects.

This class is perfect for

  • Anyone who would enjoy having a new experience in creativity.
  • Working WICE members who would enjoy relaxing and creating on Saturday.
  • Artists of all kinds who want to learn and practice new techniques.
  • Former students of Jan’s printmaking workshops who would like to continue.
  • Those who enjoy sharing a creative learning process with a small, convivial group.

No skills and no previous knowledge of the medium is necessary. This workshop is open to all levels, artists and non-artists alike, and may be repeated by anyone wishing to continue the exploring the process.
