January/February | Studio Art: Drawing and Painting | Matisse

« I believe that drawing and painting are the same thing. »

Henri Matisse

During the 1940’s Matisse’s brush and ink drawings served as studies for colorful, decoratively flat oil paintings of figures, still lifes and interiors.

This series of 5 classes was inspired by these works.

Day 1: Studies from Matisse’s brush and ink drawings

Day Two: Ink and brush drawings from still-life on butcher paper…

followed by black and white still-life drawings with acrylic on 29x21cm paper.

Day Three: Acrylic color studies on paper from Matisse oil paintings

Day Four: Adding acrylic color to acrylic to black and white drawings from day two.

Day Five: Painting an acrylic painting on canvas from still-life.

Paintings by Mavis Negroni, Mel Hildebrand, Gillian Brown and Renée Spencer.

During three sessions, participants studied Monet’s texture, brushstroke and color from the water lily paintings, then used that inspiration to paint from a still life.

Students: Kate Miller and Mary Lostak.

Our next class features Matisse: his ink/brush drawings and the paintings they inspired. Starting on Monday, January 21st, 2019. Look for information here.
