January 2020: a New Year and a new drawing class

Drawing Fundamentals:

Learn to see and find self-expression through drawing

“Drawing is the artist’s most direct and spontaneous expression, a species of writing: it reveals, better than does painting, his true personality.” Edgar Degas

If you have ever said to yourself “I’d like to try drawing”, or “I want to get back to drawing but just don’t seem to find the time”, this class would be a great way to begin the New Year.

All are welcome to join, including beginners or anyone seeking the structure of weekly meetings, guidance and inspiration from an artist who is also an experienced teacher, as well as the conviviality of practicing in a group.

Instruction includes a variety of drawing techniques and tools (ink, charcoal, pencil, and watercolor) in addition to the exploration of the many possibilities for subject matter in drawing, either through direct observation or through one’s imagination.

The registration fee for this class includes all materials.

The instructor, Jan Olsson holds an Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing. Examples of her student’s work may be seen on her teaching blog.

Class meets on the following Mondays:

January 13, 20, 27 and February 3, 2020.

Hours: 2:30pm to 4:30pm.

Registration fee: 172€

You may register for this class by going to the WICE (Where Internationals Connect in English) website.

A Matisse inspired drawing and painting workshop

« I believe that drawing and painting are the same thing. »

Henri Matisse

During the 1940’s Matisse’s brush and ink drawings served as studies for colorful, decoratively flat oil paintings of figures, still lifes and interiors.

This 5-step workshop was inspired by these works.

1. Studies with ink and brush from Matisse’s drawings

2. Black acrylic wash and brush drawings from still-life on butcher paper…

…followed by black and white still-life drawings with acrylic on 29x21cm paper.

3. Acrylic color studies on paper from Matisse oil paintings

4. Adding color to black and white drawings from day two.

5. Painting an acrylic painting on canvas from still-life.

Paintings by Mavis Negroni, Mel Hildebrand, Gillian Brown and Renée Spencer.
